What to Expect at a Bridal Makeup Trial?
So you've booked your wedding makeup artist - exciting! Or perhaps you’re still looking for one.
But now you're wondering…
What actually happens at a bridal makeup trial?
Is it really necessary?
What should you bring?
And how do you make the most of it?
As a Melbourne-based bridal makeup artist, I get these questions all the time.
So here's everything you need to know before you sit in the chair.
What Is a Bridal Makeup Trial?
A bridal makeup trial is essentially a full, practice run of your wedding day makeup - done weeks or months before the big day.
It's a dedicated appointment where you and your makeup artist work together to create, refine, and finalise the exact look you'll be wearing on your wedding day.
Think of it less like a test and more like a collaboration. It's your chance to communicate your vision, try things out, and leave feeling 100% confident about how you'll look walking down the aisle.
Is a Bridal Makeup Trial Really Necessary?
Short answer: yes, and here's why.
Your wedding day is not the time for surprises. A trial means that by the time your wedding morning arrives, your look is already locked in — your artist knows your skin, your preferences, and exactly what you love. There's no guessing, no last-minute changes, and no anxiety.
It also means your wedding morning runs smoothly and on time. When the look is already perfected, the application on the day is calm, efficient, and stress-free.
What Happens During a Bridal Makeup Trial?
Here's a breakdown of what to expect when you come in for your trial with me:
We'll have a chat first. Before I touch a single brush, we'll talk through your vision. What's your dress like? What's the vibe of your wedding — romantic and soft, bold and dramatic, classic and timeless? Do you have inspo photos saved? This conversation shapes everything.
I'll assess your skin. Every face is different, and so is every skin type. I'll take note of your skin tone, undertone, texture, and any concerns (dryness, oiliness, sensitivity), so I can choose the right products and prep your skin properly.
The application begins. I'll work through a full makeup application: foundation, eyes, lips, the whole look — based on everything we discussed. This takes approximately 1–1.5 hours.
We'll review and refine. Once the look is complete, we'll go through it together. Too much? Not enough? Want to try a different lip shade or a smokier eye? This is exactly the time to say so. Nothing is precious — we're here to get it right.
You'll wear it out. I always encourage brides to wear their trial look for the rest of the day. See how it photographs in natural light, how it wears over several hours, and how you feel in it. This gives you genuinely useful feedback before the wedding day..
What Should I Bring to My Bridal Makeup Trial?
To get the most out of your trial, here's what I recommend bringing:
Inspo photos. Save a folder on your phone of bridal makeup looks you love — and a few you don't. Both are equally helpful. The more I understand your taste, the better.
Photos of your dress (or the real thing if possible). The neckline, fabric, and colour all influence the makeup direction.
An open mind. Sometimes I'll suggest something you haven't considered, and it ends up being the best part of the look. Trust the process!
What Are My Bridal Trial Options?
At Makeup by Anastasia, I offer two bridal trial formats to suit different needs:
Standard Bridal Trial — $180 A full makeup application of your desired bridal look, approximately 1.5 hours. Perfect if you have a clear vision and want to see it brought to life.
Extended Bridal Trial — $250 A longer session of approximately 2–2.5 hours, ideal for brides who want to trial different looks, compare options, or really take their time refining every detail before committing to a final look.
Both trials are completely standalone services — there's no obligation to book your wedding day makeup with me afterwards, though I'd love to be part of your day!
A Few Final Tips for Brides
Come with clean skin. Arrive with no makeup on so we can start fresh and get the most accurate result.
Be honest. If something doesn't feel right — the coverage, the shade, the lash style — say so in the moment. There are no wrong answers, and I genuinely want you to love your makeup.
Take photos. Once the look is done, take photos in different lighting — inside, outside, in natural light. This is your reference for the wedding day and helps me replicate it perfectly.
Trust the process. A bridal makeup trial is one of the most enjoyable parts of wedding planning when you approach it with curiosity rather than pressure. You're supposed to have fun with it!
